Melvin A. Textoris

died on Tuesday, March 02, 2010

Struthers - Melvin A. Textoris, 84, formerly of Overlook Blvd in Struthers, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Maplecrest Nursing Home where he was a resident.

Mr. Textoris was born August 3, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of the late Andrew and Anna Danus Textoris.

He was a 1943 graduate of Chaney High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Radioman second class. Mr. Textoris worked as a design engineer and director of research and development at the Chagrin Falls branch for General Fireproofing, retiring in 1982. After retirement, he continued to work as a consultant for the Dray Company in Warren, the Gasser Chair Company in Liberty, and the former Quality Upholstery in Youngstown.

He was passionate about many things, but music was a large part of his life. Playing locally, from the age of 13, for more than twenty years, his main instruments were clarinet, saxophone, and guitar. He also enjoyed golf, and bowling and was an avid fan of area high school and college football. He and his wife were loyal supporters by their attendance at the many musical concerts and fine arts events presented by the College of Fine & Performing Arts at Youngstown State University.

He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown and served as past president of the church's council. Mr. Textoris was also a member of the Wick Lodge No. 0481 Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, the former Marion Brosko, whom he married June 4, 1949; his daughter, Karen (Joseph) Edwards of Poland; son, Melvin C. Textoris of Struthers; sister, Marjorie Tomo of Youngstown; grandson, Justin Joseph Edwards of Poland; and two nieces, Deborah (Ernest) Camodeca of Ashtabula and Susan (Ted) Perkins of Austintown.

A private memorial will be held by the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. Textoris's name to The Friends of Music Association, Dana School of Music, YSU, 1 University Plaza, Youngstown, Ohio 44555 where an Edwards/Textoris Scholarship Fund will be created.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Sunrise Assisted Living and Maplecrest Nursing Home for their kind and attentive care of Mr. Textoris.

I am truly saddened by the loss of a wonderful man. He was my Godfather. Melvin always had a quick smile, a wink and always a funny joke to tell. He could make you laugh. I will miss that. As a little girl I always marveled that he could just sit down at the piano and start to play without any sheet music and then begin to sing made up songs as he went along..... I will miss that too. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to my Godmother, his wife and Karen and Mel, Joe and Justin. I pray God wraps his arms around all of you and held to comfort you at this sad time. May all of your memories keep him alive in your hearts forever. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Susan and family

I'm very sorry for your loss. I didn't hear the news until I read the Struthers Journal on-line this morning. I have fond memories of Mr Textoris from my childhood - especially at Halloween when he and Mrs. Textoris would make popcorn balls to hand out to all the kids. A simpler time. A good man.
